The meeting was chaired Deputy Governor General for Political and Social Affair, and with the presence of the head of the Provincial Management and Planning Organization, the Director General of Center for Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Islamic Republic of Iran, Chancellors of Zahedan, Zabol and Iranshahr Universities of Medical Sciences, and the governors of the southern cities of the province  and executive directors of the province and the city of Chabahar.

 

Dr Hashemi  Shahri, Chancellor  of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, referring to the launch of the "National High Blood Pressure Control Campaign" , said: "The death toll from the complications of hypertension in our country is 6 times higher than road traffic accidents, and about one-third of people over the age of 30 are expected to be have blood pressure". The campaign  launched in May 27and It will continue until the end of July.

 

"Although timely identification of the disease and the treatment of hypertension reduces its complications and risks, but unfortunately, more than half of the people with hypertension in the early stages of their illness are unaware of their condition." he said.

 

Dr. Hashemi Shahri  emphasized on the necessity of screening for hypertension. "In addition to raising awareness, today, the correct implementation of this national campaign  and achieving the highest percentage of screening coverage for the target group is our most important duty in healthcare facilities. He added: "The National Blood Pressure Control Campaign" has started with goals of promoting the health of the community through identifying and discovering high blood pressure cases, informing people about risk factors of high blood pressure and modification in life style and eating behaviors such as reducing the daily consumption of salt in the population".

 

The Chancellor of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences reinstated that the success of this national campaign would be achievable through the proper implementation of the program by medical universities, the participation of people in screening and inter-sectoral cooperation and the fulfillment of their respective duties by other governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions. He also called on the media for their full cooperation for encouraging people for lifestyle changes and  participation in the campaign.

 

Referring to the fact that 70% of dialysis patients in Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, have ended up having chronic renal failure as a result of high blood pressure he added: "Since the launch of the integrated Primary Health Care System and the establishment of the Electronic Health Records, 62,815 patients have been diagnosed with hypertension". According to a STEPs survey conducted in 2016, approximately 22% of the population aged 18-74 year in Sistan & Blouchestan Province are found to have high blood pressure.

 

The Chancellor of the Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, describing the actions taken in the framework of the National High Blood Pressure Control Campaign at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, said: "In addition to setting up blood pressure check stations, we need the cooperation from other institution for raising awareness and improving the knowledge of the society . The mass media, community-based institutions such as Neighborhood Health Centers ,and other executive agencies can play an important role in this regard".
