News > Home gardens: a promising approach to empower rural women through healthy nutrition education and to enhance household food security and wellbeing

Home gardening is the use of an area around the residence where various herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be grown year-round for household consumption together with some livestock. It has been well established that women empowerment is a foundation for improving nutrition and food security.  There is some evidence that women’s training in home gardening and nutrition empowers women. Home garden interventions can therefore make an effective contribution to addressing micronutrient undernutrition.

The “Home Gardening Program” has been implemented in rural areas covered by Zahedan University of Medical Sciences in collaboration with Agriculture Organization, and the program includes the following activities:

1- Food groups educations, the importance of consuming vegetables and its role in health and strengthening the immune system against diseases

2- The important role of women in improving nutrition and health of families

3- Teaching how to create home gardens

4- Free seed distribution

5- Suggestions and advices for setting up a rural women fund for home employment
