World AIDS Day & International Volunteers Day 2017- Ceremony & Awards
World AIDS Day - December 1, 2017
World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st December each year. It"s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day. World AIDS Day highlights the success of worldwide efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, as well as the importance of continued support for these efforts.
The World AIDS Day, 2017 in ZAUMS was celebrated with a focus on HIV stigma. Stigma, when associated with HIV, another medical condition, mental illness or disability, prevents a person from seeking evaluation and treatment, disclosing the diagnosis to those most likely to provide support, and following treatment guidelines. HIV is an infection which many people have fears, prejudices or negative attitudes about. Stigma can result in people with HIV being insulted, rejected, gossiped about and excluded from social activities.
The World AIDS Day Award 2017 was presented to Dr. Hamidreza Koohpaye, an infectious diseases specialist and a member of academic staff, BooAli Infectious Disease Hospital, Zahedan, Iran, who contributed so much to HIV prevention and care in Sistan & Balouchestan Province, Iran.
International Volunteer Day (IVD)
International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector.
This year in ZAUMS we celebrated IVD with a volunteer recognition event, to pay special tribute to people"s participation in making a difference in public health. ZAUMS so far, has recruited more than 10 thousands CHVs, who have been participating in a wide range of public health events and activities planned by the university.
