Dr. Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei
M.D, Ph.D (University of Western Australia)
Associate Professor of Epidemiology
After graduation from Zahedan School of Medicine in 1997, Dr. Tabatabaei worked in the field of public health in Sistan and Balouchestan Province. He served as a medical doctor in a rural setting, district tuberculosis coordinator and as a manager of public health at the district and provincial level. As part of his job, he has been dealing with a wide range of public health problems and emergencies including malaria, tuberculosis, cholera and vaccine preventable diseases. He has some experience in implementing joint projects with international agencies such as UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO. Given the fact that a significant proportion of under-privileged population are living in Sistan and Balouchestan province, non-communicable diseases especially hypertension and diabetes are also major public health issues in this province. In line with the Iran Ministry of Health priorities and NCD control program, he has been planning and implementing population-based interventions to tackle NCD risk factors.
After obtaining his Ph.D. degree in epidemiology from University of Western Australia in 2009, he was employed by Zahedan University of Medical Sciences as a member of academic staff. Ever since, he has planned and conducted a wide range of research projects related to communicable and non-communicable diseases, and other public health issues. Currently he is a member of Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine Research Center, Health Promotion Research Center and Pregnancy Health Research at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences. He has been teaching epidemiology to students from different disciplines and also have been supervising and co-supervising medical specialty, medical and master students dissertations. He has an experience in teaching both at the University of Western Australia as an associate lecturer (2007-2009) and at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, as a member of academic staff since 2009. He was serving as Vice Chancellor for Health in Zahedan University of Medical Sciences from 2009 to 2022. He was appointed as Advisor to Chancellor for International Affairs in May 2022.
