Medical and public health services provided to more than 86 thousands of Pakistani pilgrims in Sistan & Blouchestan Province, southeast of Iran during the Arbaeen Pilgrimage in 2019

Each year, a huge number of Pakistani Shias cross the Iran-Pakistan border and head to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to join the Arbaeen walk and perform mourning rites. Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (As).
Zahedan University of Medical Sciences with the participation and cooperation of the health departments of other governmental, military and law enforcement agencies, such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), the Iranian Army Ground and Border Forces, Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), Health Charitable Institutes, and NGOs, has established the "Arbaeen Health &Treatment Committee" to provide medical and health services to the esteemed pilgrims of Arbaeen in recent years.
We have been reviewing the performance records of service delivery over the past few years with the aim of improving the coordination between participating organizations in delivering proper and quality healthcare services to Pakistani Arbaeen pilgrims. This has achieved through the empathy and coordination of the "Arbaeen Health & Treatment Committee" member organizations, based on the proper planning and the development of an annual plan of action.
This year we established 2 medical bases (Arbaeen Health Mowkibs) in Mirjaveh Border Terminal and Zahedan Imam Reza (AS) Guesthouse and 6 mobile medical teams deployed to offer services to other temporary accommodation facilities for Pakistani pilgrims. A total of 1201 healthcare workers and volunteers provided round-the-clock services to respected Arbaeen pilgrims. The following section is a brief report on different medical and preventive services provided to Arbaeen pilgrim during October 2019.
A. Pre-hospital emergency services:
A total of 9 ambulances and 2 ambulance buses were deployed to offer emergency medical services.
B. Inpatient and hospital services:
There were 238 hospital beds, 3 isolated respiratory beds and 7 ICU beds were ready for admission of possible accident cases. During the Arbaeen 2019, we had 52 days hospitalization for Pakistani Arbaeen pilgrims in Mirjaveh and Zahedan hospitals.

A mobile laboratory system was deployed to Mirjaveh Border terminal. The medical diagnostic laboratories also provided services when needed.
H. Medication procurement:
The medications were provided by Zahedan and Mirjaveh Health Centers, the Provincial Pharmacists Association and pharmaceutical companies, Barakat Foundation, and IRGC.
