An ophthalmologist with Al-Zahra (S) Sub-specialty Hospital, Zahedan, Iran, elected as the model of professional qualification at the 15th Professor Shamss Foundation Ophthalmology and Visual Science Festival

Dr. Mohammad Arish, subspecialist in neuro-ophthalmology of Al-Zahra (S) Hospital, Zahedan, Iran, was elected as a professional qualification model at the 15th Professor Shams"s Foundation Ophthalmology and Visual Science Festival.
Professor Mohammad-Gholi Shams was born in 1904. In 1923, at the expense of his father, he entered the medical field at the University of Lyon. In 1932, before the establishment of Tehran University, he returned to Iran at the invitation of the Minister of Science and taught medicine as a professor at Dar al-Funun (the oldest Western-style institute of higher education in Iran).
Professor Shams is the founder of Farabi Ophthalmology Hospital as the first specialized ophthalmology center in Iran. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the French Ophthalmological Society and was elected many times as the president of various ophthalmological societies in the world. He is the founder of the Iranian Ophthalmology Association and the specialist journal of Ophthalmology. He, who until his last days at the age of 92, was studying the treatment of patients, died in 1996. The 12th National Congress of Iranian Ophthalmology honored him as an outstanding professor and the father of Iranian Ophthalmology.
The Professor Sham"s Foundation Ophthalmology and Visual Science Festival is annually held to honor and encourage scientists and scholars, identify and introduce top scientific-research projects, and introducing superior performances and results and effective and lasting measures in the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Alireza Maleki, Head of Al-Zahra (S) Hospital said: "This year, the title of a model of professional qualification was assigned to Dr. Arish, a subspecialist in neuro-ophthalmology at Al-Zahra (S) Hospital. He has more than 40 years of professional experience in the field of ophthalmology and is known throughout the province as an ethical ophthalmologist."
Dr. Arish is also, one of the country"s prominent subspecialists in the field of glaucoma treatment, because by inventing a new method of glaucoma surgery, he has been able to provide a new effective and less complicated treatment for patients with glaucoma.
He is considered as one of the philanthropic subspecialists and is leading in many charitable activities. He is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, which is one of the most prestigious universities in the world with more than 500 years. He graduated from this university in 1990 and returned to his homeland to serve. He has Fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ireland, as well.
