Safe Neighborhood Project Report Update May 2019

With the aim of creating a safe society and increasing community resilience to disasters and incidents and reducing the risks of such incidents and developing a program for assessing preparedness and education of households against disasters, the Safe Neighborhood Project was launched on May 4, 2019, with the presence of a Chancellor of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences and a group of directors and Members and residents of the Morvarid residential complex in Zahedan city.

Fortunately, this project has been implemented in close co-operation with the health system and the society.

This report is the first progress report on the implementation of the project that is being developed and disseminated for use by stakeholders.

Thanks and gratitude to all the health care workers involved in the implementation of the project. Special thanks to the residents and families of the Morvarid residential complex, the Community Health Volunteers.

The most important activities of the Community Health Volunteers (CHVs):

Household training of the Poster # 1 on hazard identification by CHVs and conducting household evaluation by 4 project volunteers:

Problems during the implementation of the project:

The first set of problems: The lack of cooperation of some residents with CHVs, the lack of cooperation of some of the volunteers during the implementation of the project, the lack of cooperation of some members of the Board of Trustees due to various problems, the inappropriate time of launching the project due to the holy month of Ramadan and the lack of cooperation of the people of the residential complex during the day time.

Interventions: Presence of healthcare workers and Disaster Risk Management experts in the field for informing the public and encouraging them to actively take part in the project, and boosting the activities to recruit CHVs from other centers.The interventions somewhat has led to solving the problem.

The second problem: An intense gust of wind blew the posters away, and the residents refused to reinstall them. It was acknowledged that, given the weather conditions, there is a possibility of repetition of the problems with the posters. Repeated reinstallation will generate noise and it might be disturbing to the residents.

Intervention: The instructions for mounting wooden frames were issued for easy installation of posters.
