Misuse of antibiotics puts us all at risk

Taking antibiotics when you don't need them speeds up antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistant infections are more complex and harder to treat. They can affect anyone, of any age, in any country.

Think twice. Seek advice

Antibiotics aren't always the answer. Always seek the advice of a healthcare professional before taking antibiotics.

Our time with antibiotics is running out

Antibiotics are in danger of losing their effectiveness due to misuse and overuse, and in many cases they aren't even needed.

Misusing and overusing antibiotics puts us all at risk

Taking antibiotics when they are not needed accelerates emergence of antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest threats to global health.

Everyone has a role to play

You can help prevent antibiotic resistance. Preventing infection can reduce the use of antibiotics, and limit the spread of antibiotic resistance. Good basic hygiene is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of infection.

Dr. Ruhi Afkari, a researcher with Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, succeeded in inventing a combination of oxalate-decomposing probiotic bacteria and plant extracts that proved to be effective in reducing calcium oxalate kidney stones. The Head of Intellectual Property Office of ZAUMS announcing this news regarding the importance of this invention, said: “kidney stone is a common disease in the urogenital system, which still there is no definitive treatment to this condition”.

“Oxalates present in kidney stones are strong toxic compounds and their accumulation in the tissue causes disruption and tissue damages”.  Dr. Lili Mohammadi continued “Investigations have shown that by excreting oxalate through the urine, oxalate crystals precipitate and cause the formation of stones in the urinary tract”.

According to Dr. Mohammadi, it has been proven that oxalate-dissolving probiotics balance and break down oxalate in the digestive system. On the other hand, today, with the new approach of medical science to medicinal plants, new treatment methods have been developed to cure various diseases, including kidney stones.

She added: Considering the clinical problems and high treatment costs caused by the increase in urinary oxalate and considering that probiotic bacteria and plant extracts can have a direct effect on reducing kidney tissue inflammation and kidney stone formation, Dr. Afkari investigated the effect of simultaneous consumption of different concentrations of probiotic bacteria and different concentrations of effective herbal ingredients on kidney stones in laboratory rats and healthy individuals and registered this valuable invention.
