The induction meeting for the third group of international students took place on June 1st, 2025, at the EDC Conference Hall of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences (ZAUMS). The event was held with the presence of the Vice Chancellor for Education, Dr. Khajeh; the Vice Chancellor for Student and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Abbasi; the Director of Educational Affairs, Dr. Atash Panjeh; and the Advisor to the Chancellor for International Affairs, Dr. Tabatabaei, along with experts from the International Affairs Office and representatives from the Consular Affairs Office.
At the commencement of the meeting, Dr. Tabatabaei extended a warm welcome to the students and congratulated them on the onset of the new academic year. He presented Sistan and Baluchestan Province as the youngest province in Iran in terms of demographic composition and elaborated on the region’s potential as well as the university's accomplishments in the fields of healthcare, education, and research. He underscored several of the university’s national and international recognitions and reiterated the institution's commitment to fostering global citizens.
He emphasized that international students act as representatives of their home nations throughout their academic journey, and upon graduation, they will also embody the values of ZAUMS. He urged the students to work diligently towards acquiring the scientific and social skills necessary to fulfill expectations and make significant contributions in their respective fields.
He also highlighted the university's strategic benefits in attracting and educating international students, particularly from Pakistan. He pointed out cultural and religious similarities, along with shared regional health issues—such as malaria, dengue fever, tuberculosis, and thalassemia—as crucial elements. He asserted that ZAUMS offers a distinctive educational environment for addressing these public health challenges through both teaching and clinical experience.
Dr. Khajeh provided a summary of the university’s history, its academic framework—including the number of schools, faculty members, and students—as well as its affiliated teaching hospitals and academic programs. He also noted the university’s position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and its scientific achievements.
Dr. Atashpanjeh, the Director of Educational Affairs, provided a detailed explanation of the regulations and framework of the medical education program. He discussed the various stages of study, the allocation of academic credits, mandatory attendance, the process of course registration, and the procedures for adding or dropping courses.
To invigorate the atmosphere and encourage participation, Dr. Tabatabaei subsequently launched an icebreaker activity featuring "Have You Ever...?" questions, which encouraged students to engage in informal discussions and share their personal experiences.
Afterward, Dr. Abbasi addressed the cultural context of the region. He highlighted the importance of the Axis of Resistance and the solidarity among Islamic nations. Additionally, he offered an overview of the student services and amenities available at the university, including accommodation, dining options, transportation, health insurance, and more.
Ms. Fouladi, the Officer for Consular Affairs, provided details regarding the admission processes for international students, which encompassed consular regulations, visa issuance, student residence permits, policies on leave of absence, and the procedures for exiting and re-entering the country. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of the Consular Affairs Office in managing administrative issues related to students.
The session wrapped up with a question and answer, where students expressed their challenges and concerns regarding their experiences at the university.
