Misuse of antibiotics puts us all at risk

Taking antibiotics when you don't need them speeds up antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistant infections are more complex and harder to treat. They can affect anyone, of any age, in any country.

Think twice. Seek advice

Antibiotics aren't always the answer. Always seek the advice of a healthcare professional before taking antibiotics.

Our time with antibiotics is running out

Antibiotics are in danger of losing their effectiveness due to misuse and overuse, and in many cases they aren't even needed.

Misusing and overusing antibiotics puts us all at risk

Taking antibiotics when they are not needed accelerates emergence of antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest threats to global health.

Everyone has a role to play

You can help prevent antibiotic resistance. Preventing infection can reduce the use of antibiotics, and limit the spread of antibiotic resistance. Good basic hygiene is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of infection.

On August 23, 2024, the International Affairs office and the ZAUMS Counseling Center, Vice Chancellery for Cultural and Students Affairs hosted a mental health awareness event covering important topics for newly enrolled international students at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences.

The event was started with icebreaker activities which included “names game” and “paper airplanes”, engaging the international students in joyful contests and activities.

The “paper airplane activity” was all about enjoying the moment!

We provided each student with a piece of paper and something to write with. Asked them to write a question on the piece of paper, then fold it into an airplane with their name on it. Once everyone was done making their airplanes, we had everyone fly their planes across the room.

Everyone picked up a different paper airplane from their own and then found its rightful owner and asked them the question that was written on the plane.

After a few minutes, we had the group reconvene and had each student introduce the person whose plane they found with their name, the question they wrote, and what their response was.

At this event Ms. Samane Fouladi, an experienced psychologist and mental health counselor gave a talk on different topics related to mental health for students studying abroad. She also introduced counseling services offered to students.

The first topic covered was studying abroad. Advisors provided an overview of academic resources, and strategies for getting involved on campus. They emphasized the importance of psychological strategies for transiting this phase.

The discussion then shifted to the challenges of cultural adjustment. and counselors highlighted common difficulties like language barriers, homesickness, and adjusting to different social norms. Students were encouraged to be patient with themselves and take advantage of international student clubs and events to build a support network.

Another key focus was the psychological aspects of dormitory living. Counselors addressed common stressors like roommate conflicts, managing independent living, and feelings of isolation. They provided tips for maintaining mental health, such as practicing self-care, reaching out to resident advisors, and accessing the university's counseling services.

The session concluded with an introduction to the counseling center. Counselors outlined the available resources, including individual therapy, support groups, and workshops. They assured students that all services are confidential and free of charge, urging them to utilize these critical support systems as needed.
