The meeting of vice chancellors and Directors of international affairs of Iranian medical universities was held to examine the opportunities to strengthen health diplomacy, Tehran, September 2023
The Special Assistant to the Iran’s Minister of Health and Director-General of International Affairs Department referring to the holding of the 4th meeting of vice chancellors and managers of international affairs of medical universities, vice chancelleries, and affiliated organizations of the Ministry of Health, stated that this meeting was held to examine opportunities and capacities to strengthen health diplomacy.

The Special Assistant to the Iran’s Minister of Health and Director-General of International Affairs Department referring to the holding of the 4th meeting of vice chancellors and managers of international affairs of medical universities, vice chancelleries, and affiliated organizations of the Ministry of Health, stated that this meeting was held to examine opportunities and capacities to strengthen health diplomacy.
Dr. Mohammad Hossein Niknam, stated: “In this meeting, topics such as special considerations for international collaborations, management of international health services, training international students, cross-border health and medical cooperation, scientific and technological cooperation with international educational and research centers, as well as short-term non-degree courses and summer schools were discussed”.
He mentioned that in the Group of 5 countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Iraq, and a representative from the World Health Organization country office, previously known as the G5 group, has now transformed into G5+. The Iran’s Ministry of Health is planning to establish these groups to strengthen cooperation in the field of health.
Dr. Niknam added: “Iran is seeking to form health cooperation groups with some Latin American countries as well as African countries. Furthermore, in the region, we are aiming to strengthen regional health and medical cooperation with some Arab countries with high domestic gross domestic product (GDP) in the Persian Gulf region”.
Referring to the meeting with the health ministers of our country and Saudi Arabia on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in Geneva and also in a webinar, highlighted: “In the near future, a memorandum of understanding to enhance health cooperation between Iran and Saudi Arabia will be signed, which includes various sections. The proposed memorandum of understanding has been exchanged and approved by both sides, and it will be signed by the health ministers of the two countries at the first opportunity in Tehran or Riyadh”.
In this meeting Dr. Tabatabaei, Advisor to Chancellor for International Affairs at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences gave a presentation entitled “Health Diplomacy implications for Cross-border Cooperation in Healthcare” highlighting the opportunities, achievements and challenges in cross-border collaboration with a focus on the lessons learned from COVID-19 pandemic.
