The scientific cooperation of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, Pakistan and Zahedan University of Medical Sciences a step towards the quantitative and qualitative improvement of regional health services

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, a delegation from the Iran"s Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education headed by Dr. Malek Fazli, the Representative of the respected people of Saravan city in the Islamic Consultative Assembly (i.e. the Iranian Parliament),, including Mr. Dr. Ghaznavi, the Chancellor of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Tabatabaei, Advisor to the chancellor of ZAUMS for International Affairs, Dr. Saberi, Director of Health Technology Development of ZAUMS and Mrs. Farzadeghi, Senior Expert in International Relations Office of the Iran"s Ministry of Health, and Mr. Mohammad Amin Ghafarzadeh, Deputy Director of Student Affairs, Scholarships and Schools Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Dr. Shahid Rasool, Executive Director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi, Pakistan, and the managers and medical doctors of this center, including Dr. Muhammad Sule, Deputy Executive Director of the Center. Dr. Tariq Mahmood, Head Department of Radiology, CyberKnife & Tomotherapy, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, and Dr. Parvez Hashemi, director of the simulation laboratory of DOW University of Health and Medical Sciences , Karachi.
In this meeting, Dr. Fazeli pointed out the importance of educational and scientific cooperation in strengthening and sustaining the friendly relationship between the two countries. He stated that every year a number of Iranians living in Sistan and Baluchistan Province travel to Pakistan and especially to Karachi to receive medical services. Dr. Ghaznavi introduced the history and the capacities of ZAUMS, including the presence of more than 400 faculty members, the existence of 8 research centers and the annual publication of more than 400 articles per year. He suggested strengthening scientific cooperation in the form of scientific lectures, virtually and in person, and collaboration in supervising student theses and research projects. ZAUMS announced its readiness to train medical doctors on infectious disease and emergency medicine specialty programs free of charge.
Prof. Syed Masroor Ahmed, the Dean of JPMC, emphasized on strengthening the provision of services to people in need in two countries. He stated that it is very important to strengthen regional research cooperation, because due to genetic differences, research results in western countries cannot necessarily be generalized to the society of our region. In line with the ethnic and genetic similarities of the people of Iran with Pakistan, the infectious diseases, and issues related to the maternal and child health, conducting regional research can solve the health problems of the region. At the end of the meeting, the both side agreed on the matters to be discussed to be prepared in the form of a draft memorandum on joint health cooperation between ZAUMS and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. After the approval of the parties it could be used as roadmap for research and treatment collaborations in the region.
Next, the expedition delegation of Iran visited the center of radiotherapy and robotic therapy, (Cyberknife and Tomotherapy) under the guidance of Dr. Tariq Mahmoud and got to know the treatment process of the patients closely. Mr. Dr. Tariq Mahmoud announced his readiness to accept patients in need of the center"s robotic medical services as well as the training of Iranian specialists. It should be noted that the construction and equipping of this center was done with the financial support of four philanthropic families and two banks of Karachi. This center provides free of charge robotic treatment services to the patients of Pakistan and 15 other countries.
The Iranian delegation also visited the simulation laboratory of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) with the guidance of Dr. Parvez Hashemi, a faculty member and specialist in medical education of the university. In this visit, delegation got acquainted with high-tech simulators and other facilities that are used in the education of students of medical sciences. Dr. Parvez Hashemi announced his readiness to visit the simulation center of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences and hold training workshops on new educational methods for the faculty members of ZAUMS.
