The second meeting of the Internationalization Council of the Zahedan University of Medical Sciences (ZAUMS) was held for this year on 13/11/2023, with the presence of the Chancellor and vice chancellors of the university, a group of managers and a number of heads of schools and deans of hospitals.

At the beginning of this session, Dr. Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, the Adviser to Chancellor for international affairs, reviewed the previous session's approval and reported on the measures taken.

According to public relations report, Dr. Habib Ghaznavi, Chancellor of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, while appreciating the actions taken regarding international education said: "With the efforts of the international affairs office, we have witnessed the expansion of activities in the field of internationalization of the university and the promotion of the university's status at the national and international arenas".

He continued: “Currently, Zahedan University of Medical Sciences is recognized as an influential university in the field of internationalization of medical education in the region, and the participation of the university in the group 5 meeting is a sign of the importance of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences in the field of health diplomacy and regional health cooperation”.

Dr. Ghaznavi added: "The geographic location of Sistan and Balouchestan Province and access to neighboring countries from land and the sea are features that have increased the importance of internationalization of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences."

The Chancellor of the university said: "Planning to recruit international students is one of the priorities of internationalization of the university and in the near future we will see the beginning of international students studying in this university".

Dr. Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, advisor to the Chancellor of the University for International Affairs, also said: "For the internationalization of the university, we must first create a culture of internationalization of medical education, starting with internationalization of at home. In this regard, we need the help and participation of all faculty members and staff."

 Emphasizing the subject of "internationalization at home", he continued: "The internationalization of the university should become a discourse and be included in all educational, research, medical services and health activities of the university".

The adviser of the university Chancellor for international affairs added: "Empowering the faculty members in the field of internationalization of medical education and improving the quality and quantity of education in the form of holding workshops on the following topics: familiarization with the concepts of internationalization of medical education, familiarization with the concepts of internationalization at home, scientific and educational diplomacy, internationalization of medical education curricula, international ranking systems of universities, principles of effective classroom management, familiarization with modern teaching methods, etc. will take place in near future. Moreover, in order to improve the English language skills workshops and training courses on subjects such as English for public speaking and lectures, English for official correspondence and e-mails, etc., will also be conducted.

Referring to the holding of weekly academic lectures in English language at the university, he said: "One of the advantages of holding these sessions, in addition to improving the English language skills of the participants, is identifying the capacities and potentials of faculty members, staff and students."

Considering that this year three hospitals affiliated to Zahedan University of Medical Sciences were granted International Patient Department (IPD) certificates that gives them permission to provide treatment services to international patients, in this meeting the managers and representatives of Al-Zahra (SA) and Ali Ibn Abi Talib (PBUH) specialty and subspecialty hospitals reported on the measures taken and the challenges related to the health tourism program.

In this meeting, the training and empowerment of medical doctors and healthcare providers  of the health tourism department of hospitals with IPD certificates, the identification of the treatment service packages and related  tariff for health tourism services in the above hospitals, and the planning and follow-up of health tourism challenges regarding accommodation, transportation, security and recruitment of health tourists in meetings with the presence of the Director General of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization of the province and the member organizations of the tourism working group of the province were emphasized”.

In the continuation of the meeting, Vice Chancellor for Management, Development, Resources and Planning of the university presented a report regarding the contract of the actions taken to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nadjmi Charity Foundation for the establishment of a cleft palate and lip clinic in Al-Zahra (SA) Specialty and Subspecialty Hospital.
