The deadliest earthquake of the year struck the Kermanshah province, near the border of Iran and Iraq at 21:18 local timeon November 12.The two cities of Sar PoleZahab and Ghasre Shirin in the province, with a total population of almost 115 thousands, are reported to have suffered considerable damage, with almost 80% of infrastructure destroyed. In some cities running water and electricity are cut off. Many are forced outdoors in the cold weather as so many building have collapsed

The deadliest earthquake of the year struck the Kermanshah province, near the border of Iran and Iraq at 21:18 local timeon November 12.The two cities of Sar PoleZahab and Ghasre Shirin in the province, with a total population of almost 115 thousands, are reported to have suffered considerable damage, with almost 80% of infrastructure destroyed. In order to initiate effective emergency response actions, as planned by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (DMRR) Office, along with 5 teams from other universities of medical sciences, a DMRR team headed by the Director of ZAUMS Environmental & Occupational Health Department was deployed to the earthquake affected region
The team has been involved in the initial rapid assessment of the structural and non-structural (SNS) damage to the public health infrastructure, based on the functions stipulated in the Emergency Operation Plan (EOP), devised by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. The health units assessed included 8 health centers and 45 health houses. Moreover, the team has been evaluating the subsequent disruption of public health service delivery, and loss of medical supplies in Sar Pole Zahab urban and rural areas.
The DMRR team continues to work closely with health authorities in Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences to monitor the health impact of the earthquake and respond to urgent needs
