Zahedan University of Medical Sciences on the track of improving medical education

Dr. Abolfazl Golestani, the Head of the external evaluation team of the Ministry of Health, also said at the closing ceremony of the third external accreditation audit of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences: "In this visit, we have seen significant changes as compared to the previous accreditation period and the university is on the track of progress and development."

According to public relations report, Dr. Habib Ghaznavi, the Chancellor of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, said: "Improving and promoting health and treatment status of the people is one of the greatest achievements of the Islamic Revolution of Iran in the southeastern region of the country."

Referring to the 37-year history of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, he said: This university was established as the second university of medical sciences in the country after the Islamic Revolution.

He added: "We are proud to announce that we have achieved higher than the world average in many health indicators, and we have not declined in any of the indicators in the last few years."

Pointing out that we welcome the holding of specialized meetings of different groups, he said: “holding these meetings and sharing common experiences leads to the development, progress and resolution of many educational challenges and results in the improvement of the quality of service delivery”.

Dr. Ghaznavi, who was speaking at the conclusion of the third accreditation audit of the general medicine program of the university added: “The evaluation and accreditation of the university helps to identify the strengths and weaknesses [ in medical education] and improve the quality of medical education”.

He stated that EDC and EDO are the masterminds of the University of Medical Sciences and said: “EDC and EDO are responsible for promoting and developing the quality of education and it is necessary to strengthen these units”.

He added: “The purpose of conducting of the accreditation of the general medicine program is to improve, promote and guarantee the quality of medical education in medical schools across the country, including universities of medical sciences and non-governmental universities”.

The head of the evaluation team of the Ministry of Health continued: “The quality of education in the field of general medicine is the credit of the universities of medical sciences in the country, on this basis, the vice president of education of the Ministry of Health has a special view on improving the quality of education in this field”.

Dr. Rabbani, the advisor to the Deputy Education Minister of Health, also said: “The Faculty of Medicine of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences and the educational and welfare spaces have been significantly improved in terms of infrastructure”.

At the conclusion of the external accreditation of general medicine, the members of the evaluator team presented their suggestions for improving the quality of medical educations that included: regarding the strengthening EDC and EDO, the coherence of departments, increasing the educational spaces, increasing the activity hours of the library, holding a brainstorming session with faculty members and students, and evaluation of the professors’ educational performance by student at the right time, among others.

It is worth mentioning that Under auspices of the Secretariat of the Council for Undergraduate Medical Education (SCUME), Iran’s Ministry of Health & Medical Education (MoH), all universities of medical sciences in Iran approved by MoH have met the criteria for the WFME Recognition of Accreditation Programme and are being awarded Recognition Status until 30 June 2029, pending annual monitoring of continued compliance.
